Mahira Kakkar (Asha)

Mahira Kakkar was born and raised in Kolkata, India. Her grandfather gave her the name Mahira - derived from the Urdu word Mahir- which means "talented." At a young age, she won prizes in elocution contests in school, and dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer, a rock star, or an actor, but only had access to training in Bharatnatyam dance, and Hindustani classical music. Mahira graduated from the drama program at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, and was the first Indian accepted into the drama program. Since then, she has worked extensively in the theater, and in January 2013, Mahira will co-star in the play “Clive” at The New Group, directed by and starring Ethan Hawke, and also starring Vincent D’Onofrio and Zoe Kazan.
